Sextuplets Born To Minnesota Couple

(WCCO) Minneapolis A Minnesota woman gave birth to sextuplets late Sunday night at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

The babies, four boys and two girls, were born to Ryan and Brianna Morrison of St. Louis Park, Minn. The babies are all in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Brianna Morrison is in good condition at Abbott.

The babies were born by Cesarean section between 11:23 and 11:25 p.m. Sunday. They weigh between nearly 11 ounces to 1 pound, 3 ounces.

The names of the babies are: Lucia Rae, Cadence Alana, Bennet Ryan, Tryg Brenton, Lincoln Sean and Sylas Christopher.

"The babies arrived sooner than we'd hoped for, but we are optimistic," the father, Ryan Morrison, said. "Brianna is doing well. Thanks to all who are praying for our family. We are very happy to be parents."

Brianna Morrison was at the end of her 22nd week of pregnancy when the babies were delivered. The Morrisons were hoping she could make it to 30 weeks gestation.

Brianna Morrison has been on bed rest at Abbott for just over a month. When she moved into Abbott, her husband moved in with her. He's been sleeping on a blue air mattress.

The Morrisons have been married for two years. After trying for about a year to get pregnant, Brianna Morrison went on fertility drugs.

"I thought I was growing fast for only being six weeks along, but I had never had kids before," Brianna Morrison said in an interview with WCCO-TV about a month ago.

At their first ultrasound, they found out Brianna Morrison was carrying six babies. Couples in their situation have the option of what's called selective reduction, where doctors reduce the number of fetuses to give the others better odds. For the Morrisons, that wasn't an option.

"For us, there's no difference between a fetus that's undeveloped and a baby," said Ryan Morrison.

"Because it's life and God gives life and it's not up to us to decide to take it away," added Brianna Morrison.

It's not the way the eager parents would have planned things but it's exactly how they believe it was meant to happen. They view their situation, not as an accident, nor a mistake. They see it as a miracle.

Now that the sextuplets have been born there has been a non-profit fund set up to support them.

One Minnesota Sextuplet Dies

(WCCO) One of the sextuplets born in Minneapolis last Sunday has died.

A statement from Children's Hospital in Minneapolis says Bennet Ryan Morrison died Wednesday night. The five other newborns of Ryan and Brianna Morrison of St. Louis Park remain in critical condition in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children's.

The sextuplets -- four boys and two girls -- were born at the end of Brianna Morrison's 22nd week of pregnancy, about 4 1/2 months early. Their weights ranged from between 11 ounces to 1 pound, 3 ounces, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

In the statement, the parents express gratitude for the support they've received from their families, friends, and churches, as well as the staffs of Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Children's.

They say, quote, "Our faith remains strong in the midst of mourning our son."

The hospital says no further information is being released, as the parents both mourn their loss and continue to focus on their other children.

Four of the six Morrison babies born June 10 in Minneapolis have died, according to a statement released today by Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Cadence Morrison died Saturday. Three of her brothers, Tryg, Bennet and Lincoln, died within one week of their birth. The remaining two children - one boy and one girl - remain in critical condition at Children's in Minneapolis.

"Though our difficult time continues, our faith remains strong," said parents Ryan and Brianna Morrison in the statement. "Our families, friends, and churches have provided us with great comfort, for which we are deeply grateful."

The sextuplets were born at 22 weeks, which is considered an extreme limit of viability. Their birthweights ranged from 11 ounces to 1.3 pounds. Health officials believe the Morrison babies were the first sextuplets to all survive birth in Minnesota.

There are roughly a dozen sets of sextuplets to survive infancy in U.S. history. The Masche sextuplets, who were born in Arizona within 12 hours of the Morrison children, remain stable.

Brianna Morrison, 24, had taken fertility drugs for the pregnancy. The Morrisons decided against selective reduction, a procedure that would have eliminated some of the fetuses in the womb but improved the odds of survival for the remaining ones. On their web site, www.morrison6.com, the couple wrote how reduction would have interrupted whatever plan God had designed for the family.

The Morrison's struggle has gained worldwide attention. Nearly 200,000 people have visited their web site.

"I just wanted to say that I am praying with all my heart," said one writer on the site. "I check this site regularly 2 or more times a day praying to see that things are improving. I can't imagine what you both are going through."

Five of the Morrison sextuplets have died, and the lone surviving infant remains in critical condition, according to a statement released today by Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.

Lucia Rae Morrison died on Sunday, six weeks after her June 10 birth. Brianna Morrison delivered the children at 22 weeks gestation, which is 18 weeks premature and is considered the extreme limit of viability. None of the children were larger than 1 pound 3 ounces.

Sylas Morrison, a boy, remains in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children's. Three of his siblings, Tryg, Bennett and Lincoln, died within a week of birth. A fourth, Cadence, died June 23.

"Though our difficult time continues, our faith remains strong," said Ryan and Brianna Morrison in the Children's statement. "Our families, friends and churches have provided us with great comfort, for which we are deeply grateful."

The struggles are in sharp contrast to the continued progress of the Masche sextuplets, which were born in Arizona 12 hours after the Morrison children. One of the Masche babies was discharged from the hospital last week, and the other five remain hospitalized.

The Morrison sextuplets were conceived with the use of fertility drugs. The parents, both 24, have said previously that they understood the risk of proceeding with a multiple pregnancy, but declined selective reduction, a process by which some of the fetuses are terminated in the womb.

(WCCO) It was a day of sadness and celebration of life Friday at Bethany Church in Bloomington, Minn.

Brianna and Ryan Morrison held funeral services for the five babies they've lost since Brianna gave birth to six babies in June.

Friends and family joined in honoring the short lives of Lucia Rae, Bennet Ryan, Tryg Brenton, Lincoln Sean, and Cadence Alana.

Sylas Christopher remains hospitalized but is making improvements.

That is one of the worst things I have read! :(

(AP) Minneapolis The last surviving Morrison sextuplet is doing well and should be going home soon.

Spokeswoman Allison Sandve of Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota says Sylas Morrison is "progressing well."

Sylas was born with five siblings nearly four months ago. Monday would have been roughly the due date for his mother if she were having a single-child birth.

Sylas was one of four boys and two girls born on June 10 to Brianna and Ryan Morrison of St. Louis Park. The babies were born four and a half months prematurely and weighed from just under 11 ounces to about 1 pound, 3 ounces.

Three of the boys died within a week of birth, and the two girls died later.

At the family's request, the hospital is releasing no other information about the surviving baby's health.

That is awful starting out with 6 children and going home with one. My heart goes out to them.
