Creating custom whos online locations?

Hi,

Is there somewhere that has info how to do this in detail on here or vb.com ? Can't find it for the life of me. Want to be able to have custom locations, files or folders show in who's online correctly, far as I can see I need to create custom plugins for each one I think? (Andreas' who's online hack doesn't really work well outside /forum/)
