vb.org Archive - Optimisation advice

I run a forum with between 300 and 600 (can be as low as 200, can be as high as 1000, but they're rarer) people on at any given time, mostly just reading or grabbing attachments (attachment table is ~4GB)

Anyway, the board is growing and I fear it may be quickly outgrowing the server: AMD Sempron w/1GB RAM, not even enough power for my day-to-day computing needs but it just about powers the forum...

What hardware would you guys recommend for a forum with this traffic (and the near future growth)
