question photo shop please

ok so im trying to make my own banner for once, but the problem is that while trying to write on the logo i can only write in Grey not the color i want eg: red. i have cs3 photo shop and for some reason i cant write in any other color than grey even when i change to red.

any idea's please would be great thx.

Maybe image is in grayscale mode or indexed palette? If it is, change it to rgb.
