Social music site Last.fm has been bought by US media giant CBS Corporation for $280m (?140m), the largest-ever UK Web 2.0 acquisition.

The online network was founded in the UK five years ago and it now has more than 15 million active users.

It allows users to connect with other listeners with similar music tastes, to custom-build their own radio stations and to watch music video-clips.

Last.fm founding member Martin Stiksel said it was an "exciting opportunity".

that's really strange, i never understand the companies that boy such big sites for that much cash, when we know that some weeks or months later they mostly kill the site because the feeling of the site is dying...

I don't get it. I must have tried 3 or 4 times over the last year to use Last.fm, and every single time they didn't have the song I wanted, so I gave up. Seemed like a pretty lame service to me.

You don't use it to download music.

Did I say I was downloading???? Jeesh. You go there, type in an artist or song, and it finds a radio station. Except it doesn't work. Maybe it's better now, I don't know, but I'm just relating my past experiences.
