Store attachment thumbnails

My site has about 2000 images stored as thumbnails in the filesystem. At the moment threads are quite slow to load up because the thumbs are generated on the fly. Is there a hack that will create the thumbnail image when the files are uploaded and call that rather than generate a new one each time the thread is viewed ?
