Selling a skin...advice.
Heyas, folks.
I'm looking at closing down my site, http://www.ageofantiquity.com. It won BOTM here in January, but it isn't getting any traffic, and I need to concentrate my time on SpaceBuffs and my soon-to-be-launched design services site. As such, I'm going to sell the skin that's in use there. If it were up to you, would you sell the skin once, giving the buyer full and lone rights to the skin, or would you offer it as a prepackaged product for sell on your design site? Obviously, it is a highly stylized skin and wouldn't necessarily appeal to a broad range of folks, so I'm thinking it might be better to do a one-off sell. That said, it might be popular enough to net more money over time as a product.; obviously, I'd have to do some adjustments to it to make it more "generic" in that case. Thoughts? Suggestions? |
it all depend on how you see your style...
3 weeks ago i was asked to create a skin for a bass-players website... the skin was accepted by the owner and he was to pay me for it, but he vanished... not even able to pay for the upfront... so i had to decide if i release it, or i sell it.. same way as you ask here... i decided to take a guess and sell it in auction on sitepoint.com. ... the answer is quite good so far, and i think i will have my money back from that damn client... but it all depend on you... if you want to create more professional skins like you've done here, i suppose you can start advertising as a style designer... |
It seems the forum skin business is not that much different then professional web design and advertising, we wrote off over 25k last year in work completed for clients that never paid and went uncollected.
If I can add just a little advice to anyone starting or getting into a design / client based business, plan on loss, have enough capital to make it though one even two clients in a row leaving you out to dry, it happens allot. Wish you all the best luck, your designs are top notch so I know you will do well. Cheers, _V |
If It was me, I would sell it as a prepackaged product. That is were you will make your money (and to put your doudbts at rest) your styles will do very well and the style in question would appeal to a wide variety of people and staffing at a top vb style provider he would say what I just said. without a doudbt, that is were you would re-coup more money. :)
You have designed some excellent styles so I don't think I need to wish you any luck. ;) |
