Checking for Duplicate Custom Field from Table

I'm not sure if i've posted this to the right section, hopefully.

Hi people

I've created several custom fields, each custom fields are suppose to contain unique information that other users have not used. How do i go about checking that the field is unique from a table in the same database (or different db). It's my first-try at vBB modding.
