Auto merge threads?
 
Our forum is a highly technical forum that has over 65,000 members and over a million posts.

Many times users come onto the forum and without searching they ask a question. Usually these questions have already been answered a hundred times over.

One of our members came up with a great idea:

What we need is a function that when the "search" smiley is used it automatically searches for similar threads and if it is a duplicate, merge the two together. Also needs to do it retrospectively.
While I understand this would be incredibly difficult to implement, perhaps it could be done in another manner?

Perhaps threads that are tagged as similar could be sent to a moderation que (but still visible) for moderators to merge?

Am I completely out of my mind with this?

it can be done, but would be very random... actually the best related system is the "Similar Threads" search process, but as you see in the bottom of this same thread, the similar results are not very "related"...

tagging the similar threads could be possible... with this system... but i think it would give the moderators more job to verify than to effectivly merge threads...
