Default profile pic depending on gender?

I'm thinking I'm going to need 2 if conditional things for this, but basically I'd like to have 3 default profile pics (male, female, question mark) that will be shown until you upload your own.

How would I go about placing a condition so that the pic chosen is based on the user's selection of gender in a profile field?
