Probably a stupid question
 
While I have run VB before, I've never had to handle the complete setup for a company.

URL:
Do I need to purchase a domain name for the URL to be active? For example, something like: forum.companyname.com or companyname.forums.com.

I know it is probably a dumb question...but not one that I know:)

No. Subdomains are included in the purchase of a main domain name. You just need them to set it up. Or to set it up yourself if you have access.
