How can I trigger email notifications?

I'd like to tweak the NNTP Gateway mod so that email notifications work. As it is now, when a new thread is created (download via NNTP or a mailing list) no email notification (instant, daily or weekly) is sent. It's the same where I subscribe to the forum or whether I input my email address directly using ACP -> Forum Manager.

Could someone please guide me on how to trigger the notification system?
