Topic stats in sidebar (like Amazon does in their forums)
 

In the Amazon.com discussion forums they have a right-hand column where the promote related products. At the top of that column they have a nice, compact summary with stats about the thread you're looking at.

Here's an example of the text (this is much narrower on their site -- damn cut-and-paste!):

Discussion in: Alternative Rock forum
Participants: 37
Total posts: 109
Initial post: 10 days ago
Latest post: 4 hours ago

I've attached a screenshot to show how it actually looks on their site. I'd like to this very same thing on my forum, and certainly it's do-able. Can anyone help?
