I think this could be a useful mod. To prevent security loopholes, perhaps enable this only for certain usergroups. I don't know why, but when HTML is parsed by usergroup, they parse both the HTML and the linebreaks as <br>s. That way, in order to format a table, you either have to cluster all the text together (which makes editing a major pain) or else you'll get massive gaps in your posts because the table gets pushed towards the bottom each time you execute a linebreak.

Is there a method/tag that would change the post from editor format to accepting HTML only?
