upgrading

I hope i didnt post this in the wrong forum.

Right now iam using Vb 3.6 on my site, and the latest version is the 3.6.4
Is it really necessary and recommended to update my version?
I have a couple of mods installed on my forum, 13 to be exact
not major add-ons though, and also i have 4 different skins modified according to the instruction of the mods i use.
If i update will everything screw up? iam not really sure what to do = /

any suggestion/help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Your using 3.6.x and upgrading to 3.6.4

Necessary? Well everyone always recommend upgrading
You may run into some template reverts
If you have any custom php edits you will have to do them over

No, it is not absolutely necessary to update. I do because I want the latest, and most secure software, so if that is a high priority then it is suggested to upgrade.

Most of your hacks will be fine, I suggest disabling them, and reenabling them one by one to make sure they work fine.

You may have to revert templates to accomidate for the changes, so you will have to re impliment those template edits from previously installed templates once you have reverted them.

If you do it right, it is highly unlikely you will screw anything up.

to tell you the truth i have never updated my forum version
what do you mean by revert templates, shouldnt the new update work with the skins?

When you upgrade sometimes code changes in the styles. This does not automatically happen in your templates in case you have some mods it might interfere with, so you will need to manually revert them, and make any changes you made in your templates again if applicable.

thanks for all the advices =)
right now i dont have time to actually do that but i will probably do it next week
so basically i could have my forum with 3.6 and i should be ok right?

ok and last question
If i see a mod for a 3.6.3 or something would thet run on my 3.6 ?

thanks!

99% of the time, yes it will. The only way to know for sure is to try it out, or ask the author if you are not familiar with the code.

thanks!
Yeah i really was getting worried when i saw all the updates
but i guess i will stay a bit more with the 3.6 and know that i will be ok.

Hm... I would highly recommend updating. I stayed with vbulletin 3.6 for quite awhile only to be later hacked through an exploit fixed in more recent versions. Minimal damage was caused, but it took a little bit of time to sort out everything that was changed
.

I agree, if you want the most security, it is highly reccomended you upgrade as soon as possible. :)
