Getting user details

Hi,

I have a static site at www.* and a forum at forum.*

I'm wondering if, via global.php, it's possible to get the user details to put on the www.* site, such as 'Welcome guest, please register' or 'Welcome UserName, you have X private messages'

If so, does anyone have any example code for this?
