DDOS Attacks.

Do any of you worry about them?

How do you handle them?

Are they a grave concern.

A few vb boards have been hacked and ruin and one is undergoing an attack right now.

What do you all do to triumph over this type of thing?

Unfortunately there isn't really much you can do. Hopefully your host is well prepared enough that when an attack begins, they can implement an emergency block of IP addresses to the necessary servers. There are also some modern server firewalls that can differentiate between good traffic and DDoS traffic. I don't know how widely implemented they are, though...

If I ever was hit with a DDoS attack, I'd just contact my host and I guess wait it out.

I've handled one this week. Make sure that you have a good firewall in place. I used a neat script from http://deflate.medialayer.com which runs as a cron job every minute during the attack and auto-blocks any IPs with excessive numbers of connections. It fought off the attack pretty well. Moving forward you may wish to ask your host for DDoS protection 'in front' of your server so it takes the strain instead.

well for starters, move your forum to a subdomain. I got this advice from a security company and tested it myself by flooding my own forum with 4 people. and suprisingly nothing happened to my forum! Its been 6 months now and I have had some ddos attacks (seen in the server logs) but it didnt have any effect to my forum! And since it dont work i get a lot less ddos attacks. But this is also just for basic ddos attacks, if you have a pro then he will know the way to do it.

You can also install Mod_dosevasive as an add-on for apache if you have severe attacks from ghost PC's. I wouldnt recommend it unless you get attacked all the time and the subdomain option doesnt work out.

My advice is to learn how to launch such attacks yourself that way you will know how to defend your own server if it ever happens to you.

I handled them simply with this here. Mod_Sec kills all DDOS attacks. This is, or course, for a dedicated server owner. We had a problem earlier last year with a user, but not anymore ;)

I would imagine DDoS attacks are a big concern for spammers.

BigJimTheLug 01-19-2007 01:20 AM

Then stop having an imagination.

Okay, I am positive that DDoS attacks are a big concern for spammers.
