Something Ive never seen before...

Im looking for a little help or some ideas to try and create something I havent been able to find with search.

I have an image map on my forum. It is a map of the states. Clicking on a state will direct you to a forum category for that specific state.

It works great but my problem is this... There is no way to see if there is new posts or not. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could do this? Maybe make the states with new posts show as a different color??? I dunno.

Just looking for Ideas.

My image map/code was made with adobe image ready using polygon boundaries.

Here is the map

Something like this would seem logical:

Instead of making it change on mouseover, have it change when there's a new post in that category. I don't envy the task of positioning 50 spans, though I can't think of any other way to do it.

I would be very interested in something like this and being able to select different addresses.

I found a website that has pretty much what I need I just dont know how to do it. If anyone could help itd be greatly appriciated.

www.uer.ca

They also have an image map.

-They have bullets on each clickable area that change color when there are new posts

-They also have a box that pops up on mouse over that displays post info for the specific forum.

Could anyone tell me how to do either of these things?

Thanks

I can't think of a way. There might have been if it were a constant or even shape, but it's not. There's no way to say where X ends and where Y begins. So you have to manually point ouf the shapes yourself. :(

The site i mentioned is different. Its not full sized images that change on mouse over they somehow placed these:

Which change depending on new posts etc..

so that they show up directly over this:
