Adding Side Gradients

Hiya, I'm an amateur skinner and still have plenty to learn. My latest skin really needs something around the edges, and I've seen other boards that have gradients going down the sides. Does anybody know how to achieve this? I assume some sort of template/file editing is in order, but I don't know what to edit and what code to use.

Any help would be appreciated.
