Installing Shoutbox - Wheres 777?
 

I'm trying to install a shoutbox on my test forum and need to:

CHMOD the folder 'sb' (in your forums directory) to '777', and the file inside it
'vbshout.html' also to '777'

What do I need to do to CHMOD? And I have no idea where 777 is!

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

777 is a permission setting that will allow read/write/execute for anyone to specific files or directories. I am assuming you are using an FTP program like CoreFTP..... for me, all I need to do is right click on the file or directory and choose properties. In that box I can change the setting to 777 from 755 or whatever it currently happens to be

If you are doing command line stuff, cd to the forums directory and type "chmod 777 sb", then go into that directory and type "chmod 777 vbshout.html"

I have the shoutbox up now but there seems to be some kind of error as it just says 'Loading...' When I type a shout and press enter nothing happens.

I did click vbulletin version on the dependancy field.

Can shout box slow down, or affect the running of the forum?

Make sure vbshout.php is uploaded to the Forums directory.

As for it slowing things down. It uses Ajax which uses up server resources. If you are on a decent server and not a huge forum it should not be noticeable though.

Thanks, I hadn't done that but now that i have it doesn't seem to have done anything.

I changed the permission to 777 as well just in case but still no joy:confused:

Have i missed something or should i try installing from the beginning again?

I've got it working. I uninstalled and started again. It was a school boy error...instead of uploading the contense of the 'upload' file I uploaded the whole upload file! Also the info on placing the .php was useful, as a beginner it might have taken me a while to figure that out!
