Beginners guide to banners

Can someone point me in the right direction for instructions on how to add banners to my forum (3.6.3).

Specifically I want to add a banner between :

forum list & whats going on box on the home page
Between some of the forum categories on the home page
At the top or bottom of subforum threads.

Any help would be appreciated.
