Why doesnt the IM stuff ever work?

For as long as i can remember vbulletin has had the IM icons open a popup window asking the user if they want to send a message to someone, or add them to your contact list etc.... but it has nevber worked.

Every time i click to send a person a message or add them to my contact list it just says error on page and does nothing.

Is there any kind of fix for this at all?
