Publishing a hack... questions?

I have some questions about posting a mod here...

There's an old, unsupported hack that I want to update and use.

I'm probably going to need some help integrating bug fixes, tweaking it for my own use, and updating it to 3.6.1... I'm really low on the many learning curves involved here, though I'm not new to programming in general.

The previous owner of the mod has said he has no problem with somebody else picking it up, so I'd like to update and release it for 3.6.x. By the time it's ready to publish I'll probably be ready to support it, and hopefully I'll have a couple of collaborators to help, as well.

Question 1: Is there a beginner's HOWTO for posting and managing a hack on this site?

Question 2: Until I feel ready to post it for distribution, ought I start a thread in another section of the board? Sort of a pre-beta thread? Where?

Question 3: Any chance of attracting a mentor or two? :D

Any other questions I should be asking?

Thanks,

Mike D.

Just look at how others have been done, there's no special trick to it, just post the description, fill in (or tick) the various boxes and attach the files, that's about it really. We don't have a beta forum as such, if you just have questions then the vBulletin Discussions forum (i.e. here !) is the place.

Thank you very much for answering, Paul.

The first step is to review the 350-odd posts in the hack's most recent thread and make sure all the bug fixes posted there are integrated in the files. I suppose any help I need for that process could be dealt with in the original thread in preparation for a new thread in the 3.6.x forum.

I'd just be sorry to see the thread it's being distributed from cluttered up with all the flailing around its likely to require to make it presentable. <sigh>

Would it be frowned upon to start a new thread in the 3.6.x forum at some significant revision level, just to allow the thread to be more focused on installation and end user support rather than feature development?

Or should development of a major new feature get a thread here in vBulletin Discussions?

Thanks,

Mike D.
