Problems with attachment uploading after upgrade

I've got one user reporting that he's getting a limit error when he uploads an attachment. Others don't even have the option to attach when creating a new post or reply, but they do when editing a post. I'm stumped.

I've checked the settings. Their usergroup has permission to upload, and the limit is set to zero (which is unlimited).

Is there a setting somewhere that limits the total number of attachments per user? I can't find one.

I'm getting frustrated, because it all worked fine before upgrading to 3.6.1 and, without changing any settings, now it doesn't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep I am getting an error when trying to upload any pdf file near 1MB. Even though I have set permissions to upload up to 3MB. The error says something like the MYSQL server has gone away. It almost looks like a time out issue during the upload. Smaller files however are no problem!

Yeah, same here. Any help on this one guys? I have freaks in my forum that really want to be able to post attachments without limitations.

The error message I got...

MySQL Error : Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes
Error Number : 1153
Classname : vb_database

It would appear that the problem lies within MySQL?

My users just get a message that they don't have permission to access the page. But if they post, then go back and edit the post, they can then add an attachment.

There is a limit on the size of the uploads in the admin under attachments. There is also a user upload limit amount also in the user admin. Maybe you don't have these settings set to high enough values?

See if this help's, go to your user admincp, and scroll down to attachments and open that, then click on attachment permissions.
Now you will see the document permission types, doc, pdf, etc....and then you will see the admin, moderators, users, etc.......choose say pdf and select admin, select use custom permissions, then change the 20000, to what ever number you want, like 20000000, and click save.

Try to reupload your pdf file.......

I've checked those. There are no attachment limits for the users. And these are just small images they're trying to attach.

hotwheels, I've done that, too. No luck.

I've checked every setting that I can find that might have an effect. Nothing. It's really confusing.

I have finally managed to find out what the issue was on my hosting. The following is the note from my support guys as to my issue. I suppose this might be common as a possible cause in the failing of large pdf uploads when all admin sections are set up correctly.

"The mysql start up paramemter was not high enough to accomodate the upload, and that has been corrected."

Hope this assists others with possible issues that are the same
