More Permissions Help Required

Sorry I have to post anotehr thread, but my last one passed through the pages where nobody will find it and I can't double post to bump it.

BAsically, I'm running a Big Brother style competition on my forum and I need to setup permissions for the Diary Rooms. Each hosueamte is to have their own Diary Room which only they [and all other forum users except other housemates] can see and only the housemate and the staff can post.

I set permissions to each Diary Room subforum saying that the users in the Housemates usergroup can't view the Diary Room forums but can post. I then fiddled with the access masks on my test account so I could see one diary room. However, I still can't post in it. What can I do about this?

Hello Dunc again,

Lets see if we can get you right, I will do a dummy run on my forum and then copy what i did here for you. Feel free to IM me on yahoo, not to worry we will get you sorted.

Karen

First method if you have a usergroup for your housemates, make sure this is the only usergroup they are in.

ok here we go:-

Big Brother House (main forum for competition, settings and access normal for all)

Diary room 1 - Housemate 1

  • 1. Create subforum as normal - Diary room 1

    2. Go to forum permissions and under the forum diary room 1 change permissions for housemates usergroup to deny all

    3. Go through the other usergroups - staff, admin, registered users etc and edit their permissions to what you want them to be able to see/do.

    4. Go to profile of Housemate 1 and under the access masks change his setting for this forum to grant him access.

    Diary room 2 - Housemate 2

    5. Create subforum - Diary room 2

    6. Go to forum permissions and under the forum diary room 2 change permissions for housemates usergroup to deny all

    7. Go through the other usergroups - staff, admin, registered users etc and edit their permissions to what you want them to be able to see/do.

    8. Go to profile of Housemate 2 and under the access masks change his setting for this forum to grant him access.

and repeat for every contestant and diary room.

--------------------------

Method 2 if you dont have a seperate usergroup for your contestants

Diary room 1 - Housemate 1

  • 1. Create subforum as normal - Diary room 1

    2. Go to forum permissions and forum diary room 1 change the other usergroups - staff, admin, registered users etc and edit their permissions to what you want them to be able to see/do.

    3. Go to profile of all Housemates in turn except housemate 1 and under the access masks change their settings for this forum to deny them access.

    Diary room 2 - Housemate 2

    4. Create subforum as normal - Diary room 2

    5. Go to forum permissions and forum diary room 2 change the other usergroups - staff, admin, registered users etc and edit their permissions to what you want them to be able to see/do.

    6. Go to profile of all Housemates in turn except housemate 2 and under the access masks change their settings for this forum to deny them access.

repeat

This works in my forum (v 3.5.4) but I dont know if you have any addons etc that might affect this process ie vbadvanced

Hope this is helpful and works for you in my opinion method one is the better of the two methods

I did this, but the problem is that my test account can access the Diary Room but cannot post in it. On the permissions for hosuemates on each Diary Room, I set it so users cannot view the forums but they can post. However, when on my test account I try to post a thread, it says I do not have permission to do so.

Hello Dunc

I have just seen your other thread titled 'weird forums'. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=123568

The methods I described above work on vbullein 3.5.4 where the database has not been changed, however since you have been upgrading to 3.6.0 and reverting back to 3.6.0 R3 and looking at what you describe in your other post I cant be of any help to you. Using the admin cp on its own isnt going to be enough I feel and I dont know the admin cp of the new vbulletin upgraded forums.

You need the help from someone who knows a lot more besides backoffice permissions settings, sorry.
