Creating a variable

Is there any variable that allow you to create an extra something. Let me explain, I would like to add a feature in a members control panel where they choose what usergroup they want to be in, and that selection is shown on their member infor on the left whenever they post, displaying others what usergroup they are from.

Anything similar would also help.
