similar threads (limit forums threads can pull from)

can anyone hack the similar threads function so that as admins, we can choose which forums they pull from?

we have a very active and fairly large off topic section, and 4/5 or 5/5 of the threads that pull for "on-topic" posts are totally unrelated and from the vulgar off topic forum.
