How does Attachments are linked to a post ?

I wonder how the attachment file can be linked to the post.
The fact is that when you upload the attachment file The post doesn't exist yet.
So what is the element that make the link possible ?
$poststarttime ? Sessionid ?

The system uses $posthash.

Is there an SQL table linking posthash and related post id ?
