Confused about Moderator permissions
 

Hi there :D

I am having a problem setting my Moderators up to actually moderate the boards. I have very few staff, but need for them all to be able to edit, move, close, merge and sticky threads. I don't however, want them to have access to the Mod Cp, at least not yet because they are all fairly new and I am not sure how much damage they could potentially cause kwim? I do trust them, but it would take just one of them messing around to really mess things up, so is there a way to give the permissions listed above without giving full SuperMod access?

Why would this not be default with VB? Or is it and I am just missing something here?

you could always give the supermod permissions, then change the name of the modcp directory and remove the link in the nav...then they wouldn't know about the modcp.

If you are using vB3.6 (beta), there are some more options to setup permissions for Super Moderators.

Moderator vs. Super Moderator:
If you have only a few forums, then it might be an option to use regular moderators on those forums. If you have a lot of forums and you want your Moderators to moderate globally, make them Super Moderators.

Renaming the modcp and/or admincp directory is a good security step (make sure you also edit the directory names in your includes/config.php!!!), but is security by obscurity.

To better protect, you can setup password protection for these 2 directories in your webserver.

I have about 60 forums and that includes subforums and I want the mods to help with all of the boards, not just one or two because I only have a handful of staff.


I am still learning everything so I am not sure what to rename them too or how to password protect them.

You can rename them anything you like: mysecret, n00bSonLy, a, thissuperlongdirectorynamewillkeepeveryoneout.

About password protection, do you have any server controlpanel software like cPanel?

Quite honestly, there isn't much that they can mess up in the mod control panel. :)

Take a peek in there -- and what you don't want, post it and we can help you take it out. Mostly, they have the ability to view profiles and change signatures and avatars.

Well I would consider the ability to prune all threads a bit of a potential mess up. ;)

The best bet is to password protect the modcp folder via cpanel.

True that. I don't give permissions to move/prune and have removed those sections of the code. I have done that for so long that I forgot they were there. Heh.

Then check: cPanel -> Password Protect Directories

Navigate to the admincp directory by clicking on the folder icons, then click on the name of your admincp directory.
Now start by adding 1 or more user/password's (you can choose to use 1 user for everyone, or create personal user accounts). When finished adding user(s), check "Directory requires a password to access via the web (you must check this to activate password protection)." and save.
