how can I sort the radio buttons of custom field?

I have a custom user field with about 50 radio buttons and it looks awful... there is not order to it, just rows of unordered items to choose from which is really hard to navigate. I'd like to know where modify the code to either add a '<br>' after each item or even beter - create 2 or 3 columns of the items.
