Left Side Column without Tables?

I saw Amykhar's mod for adding a column to the left side of the forums but I am wondering if there is a way to achieve the same result without nesting multiple tables?

I figure if there was, Amy would have gone that route but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I've not found a way to do that due to the volume of tables that are used in vB.
