Disable automerging of posts

The automerging of posts is extremly annoying. If I come back an hour or two later, and have a completly different thought, I want it to be in it's own post, not edited into the previous one. It should time out after 10-15 minuites and let you create a new post.

The automerging of posts is to prevent bumping of threads. It is unlikely that this will be removed.

^^

That would be more harm than good, IMHO. I agree, it can get annoying..but can and would lead to excessive and unnecessary 'bumps'.

I find it quite annoying, more than once I've gone back to a thread to add things the next day - and the posts get automerged. I'm not convinced bumping is a major issue, esp with all the new staff, but it's not me you have to convince. :)

peterska2 05-27-2006 12:21 AM

of course when you actually want it to merge it doesn't which caught me out earlier.

Mods are exempt :p enjoy it.

You wouldn't believe how often people will bump a thread, automerging means we can concentrate on issues that are much more approprite. This has come up a few times before but in general seen to be more good than evil.

If the setting is user group specific, couldn't you make an "unbumpable" user group that repeat bumpers could get banned into?

Moving members into that group would be as much work as moderating the double posts..... ;)

Can you put coders in a group with no double post merge at least? We often answer questions in multiple posts over a period of time. Not only does the double post merge hide the fact that a new answer has been added to the thread, but it doesn't even send a new post email to those that have subscribed. I've mentioned this before.

Auto-Merge should be disable for all Modification threads. Other than that, I really don't see a reason to disable this feature due to the large amount of times that our bumping rule is abused.
