chmod script

Not sure if this is really the right place to ask but it is a php script so here goes

My wonderful host has disallowed 666 and 777 for files and folders and, as yall well know, some files and folders that the devs have created require at least those 3 chmods.

Ive tried thru my ftp client and running a script but the script wasnt working out.

any advice?
