recent threads on mainpage with a slight twist

I want to display the X recent threads on my mainpage. I know I can use external.php, but the problem is, it uses the guest user account for forum permissions. We have the forum viewable by registered users only, so external.php doesn't display anything. Is there a way to make external.php or another mod use the regular user permissions? thanks
