Difference Between Plugin and Other Please?

Could somebody tell me the difference between the various hacks please?

Could somebody with little experience add a plugin and will you need to edit when there is a vb upgrade?

Many thanks

To keep it simple:

Products - are a collection of plugins, templates and phrases. Some products have thier own php files which need to be updated to your server.

Plugins - are snippets of code that "hook" into the default vbulletin files to add or change certain functionality.

These types of mods usually don't edit the core vbulletin files which makes upgrading easy as you just need to upload the new files over the old ones. You just need to do it one folder at a time so you dont over write the files that you uploaded with a certain modification.

Brilliant so I as a techno phobe can add plugins because I will not need to change any code or ftp?

Just want to check so that I can do some myself

Cheers

There are also products that don't require any edits. Youll just have to look around and download what you want then look at the instructions.

As in they will need no code changes?

I managed to add some code but thats pretty good for me ...

What happens when we upgrade with all these plugins?

Plugins and Products stay active and will generally work between incremental upgrades like vb 3.5.1 to vb 3.5.3. In a few instances where they don't, the author of the product or plugin may provide an update which you add and it replaces the old one. Its very sweet.

So as long as I subscribe to the updates I should be okay as I dont want to do anything that will make more work for me when I am not a webmaster

Cheers

Yup just use the install button and subscribe to the topics and you should be fine.
