Showing username in my portal

How to integrate "Logged in as Kelmas (Log out)" to my PHP-powered site system? Is there a way to read a cookie and select username from DB or some? I would appreciate help :)

I saw some sites redirects users to vB forum login page and then puts back to site index which shows usename and some other additional user infromation.
