changing instances of index.php

I am looking for a solution to change all instances of /forum/index.php to just /forum/ for the forum homepage. I see that vbSEO does this but don't want to buy it just for this purpose. Anyone know how I could do this?

I have changed the breadcrumb nav but the rest are still showing index.php in it.
