Proper structure of threaddisplay AJAX

I've made some very heavy changes to my threaddisplay which have partiall broken my AJAX features, and I'd like to repair them. What are the specific requirements that need to be in place to do this? I'd pull it from the code but I'm having trouble separating what's necessary from what isn't and I want only the bare essential code so it doesn't mess with my layouts.
