Banner question

how do i get my banner to take up the entire length of the page?

when i make my banner there seems to be spade left over on both side, and the top of the banner..by space im saying u can see the background...is there a special go or a style to get my banner looking, basically the style that is used here? with no background showing in the banner part?

anybody?
