Ping other sites for trackback

vBulletin could really do with a Pingback system, where it notifies other sites - such as online journals - that you have linked to them.

There's no reason why blogs alone should have this benefit, when forums are clearly a better community environment.

Here's hopeing that somebody can start the revolution and bring forums into line with this major way to send information on the internet.

If no one wants to do this voluntarily, I'll pay for exclusive rights to a script/modification that will do this.

Good idea. First of all, your servercp is likely to be able to do this to an extent.

But I would love a really detailed analysis of my referals.

I'm sure there are a lot of vBulletin sites out there that are using other sites/blogs for sources for news type posts.

My site is one of those... and there are several high PR blog sites that I've found for new news sources... most of these are running some other sort of blog software such as Typepad, Wordpress, etc.

Many of the blogs that I'm looking at have ping/trackback capability and also will have a list on their news entries of pings from other sites for that specific article.

IMHO, we're missing out on a huge opportunity to get backlinks from these high PR blogs as well as having our sites linked to blog entries of relevant content. Having our sites linked to relevant blog entries via trackback/ping could also be a very useful tool for building site traffic.

That being said.. would someone please build a ping/trackback plugin!

Add me to the list of those looking for a trackback feature. That would be great.

I started writing it for myself, but stopped because most of the sites that I would be interested in linking with have turned off trackbacks due to spam. A bunch of punks have really ruined what could be a good system of inter-site dialogue.

There are already several vbulletin sites that spam the stats mod by faking out the referrer. I would hate to see what they would do with trackbacks.

Doesn't matter if some blogs don;t take trackbacks any more - there are so many sites that can get involved in forum discussions that it remains a huge opportunity lost not to be able to show the blogsophere that - hey, online forums are also discussing you.

The feature is already available, I'm using it and getting a lot of traffic and PR thanks to the ping/trackback.

Can anyone explain pingbacks and trackbacks etc? What's the difference?

How does an external site getting linked to get notified? Do you need to actually link to them?

:)
