Yes you probably got hacked. Not easy to tell how, but you should start by looking for any strange or edited files.

what would be a way someone could hack a VB site? Aside form the password that is. I want to make sure it don't happen to me.

This is not a vB hack, but a hack of the webserver/FTP/telnet, unless you have some hack installed that gives filesystem access.

And no, it can not be classed as playing around.
