using more than 1 server?

I'm sort of jumping the gun a little bit, but I like to know a lot of things which helps me with other things such as how much to customize vbulletin.

My question is this:

If your site is huge with tons and tons of members (maybe 2,000 online at once kinda thing, so thousands and thousands of members) and some modifications and so forth, how do you use more than 1 server?

I imagine you don't put the same script on several servers, or the database should be on 1 server I imagine?

I've been to sites before where they mention that you are on server #11 using database #6 or something like that. Maybe it's too technical for me, but what I want to know is will my site get to a point where I just am screwed because it's too large, or if I have the money at that point could I invest in another server, etc.?

you can setup web server and database server on seperate machines. if you have heavy traffic up to thousands and having high database using, you may consider getting a high end server of Xeon or Opteron for your database server.
