Its Real High Time vB.org upgrades to vB 3.5.0

Now that vB 3.5.0 is released, its real high time vb.org too upgrades its website. One of the major reasons is the newposts managmeent system. Presently, its very difficult to visit this website and review 250 posts in various forums at one strech. And, if in case you can not go through all posts or close down the browser or are disconnected, there is no way to review all those posts made since your last visit.. Neither there is any facility to view posts during last 2-3 days or last week or even last month. New version makes this task much much easier. I think vb.org should consider upgrading soon.

nexialys 09-30-2005 11:57 AM

hey, nobody is 24/24 onsite, can you just do your own things, upgrade, change your style, and wait for the guys here to do their own things without a push ?!

get a life kids...

(/me hates when people push the others for things they can't have right away)

Neutral Singh 09-30-2005 12:05 PM

Hey!! Are you the Moderator or an Admin around here? I am not pushing or anything. And, if you are pushed, then please dont respond. Simple? Eh? ;)

Enjoy!!

Andreas 09-30-2005 12:13 PM

Xenon currently is on holiday .. as he is master of the code here, we surely won't upgrade before he is back :)

Marco van Herwaarden 09-30-2005 01:45 PM

And even after that, we still have a lot of custom modifications to upgrade/create/test. I don't expect it in less then 2-3 weeks.

thenetbox 09-30-2005 01:48 PM

No hurry to upgrade this site in my opinion. It's functioning well as it is :)

That's the reason we are waiting. :) He's the one who knows all the code changes done here and have been making the changes in a test 3.5 forum already. Plus we haven't completely finished the 3.5 hack database hack yet.

3.5 Gold came out earlier than expected, as I am sure all of us agree. :) Caught me by surprise!

bigcurt 09-30-2005 11:37 PM

Yes, I was thinking atleast 1-2 more RC's..but I guess there confident :)

I can't wait till AJAX post editing... I'm spoiled on my board, and then I come here and I'm like, "Ugh... page load."

Brad 10-01-2005 02:50 AM

It's a work in progress, shouldn't be to long before we see 3.5.0 here :)

Tony G 10-01-2005 07:52 AM

We'd rather see everything working (and all the new features we want) on an upgrade, so that would include the hack database and many of the suggestions you guys made in the past week that we said we'd consider when we were upgrading to 3.5. :)

I look forward to it.

For me the most important thing about a forum is content. I use QR for 98% of my posts so Ajax here would be useful, but at the end of the day I am not really phased so long as I can continue to get hot mods.

MJM 10-01-2005 01:35 PM

Xenon - Admin on holidays ...
Tempted to try this at my site, but ...
- would I return?
- what state of affairs would I be returning to? :nervous:

I hope Xenon ports This to 3.5 first.

I can't upgrade till I've got this, and seeing vB.org in the same shoes I'm in makes me less envious ;)

Xenon is THE man in here! Go, go, go! :D

Erwin 10-01-2005 11:36 PM

The templates are all ready (thanks to Brad), the plugins are all done (thanks to Xenon)... it's a matter of finishing up the hack database (Marco is doing that) and then when Xenon comes back, upgrade time.

MGM 10-01-2005 11:42 PM

I, myself, am awaiting for vb.org to upgrade to 3.5 before becoming active. I can't stand going to a high-traffic forum without 3.5's read mark system anymore :p

*waits patiently*

MGM out

Sorry for the possibly obviously silly question, but what is the database hack? I must have missed the posts about it.

I ran a quick search but nothing specific seemed to come up.

Andreas 10-01-2005 11:46 PM

A Database style frontend for searching/viewing hack releases.

Marco van Herwaarden 10-02-2005 06:17 AM

Well it is basically nothing more then a configurable attribute database, that you can attach to threads. Fully searchable ofcourse.

Snake 10-02-2005 11:21 AM

Err one thing. Are we allowed to post feedbacks and suggestions for the database hack? I'm pretty sure the staff will like our future suggestions.

Marco van Herwaarden 10-02-2005 01:28 PM

Well there is not much to give feedback about, since there is nothing for members to see yet.

Besides it has already been discussed many times what members would like to see.

Snake 10-02-2005 01:37 PM

I wonder if we can take a sneak peak at the database hack... :D

Marco van Herwaarden 10-02-2005 01:49 PM

Nope, no snake peak's allowed. :D

Quozt 10-02-2005 02:18 PM

what about a sneek peak? i dont like snakes?... hello im Dom btw

Marco van Herwaarden 10-02-2005 02:35 PM

Nope, no sneek, snake or sneak peaks allowed. ;)

PS It wouldn't help much since it will be a generic system, that will when finished just be configed to be used as Hack Database.

More like thanks for coding the whole thing? :p

It's a suggestion, nobody is pushing anybody. I agree that it would be nice if vBorg would upgrade to 3.5.0 stable, now that it is out. But it is always up to the staff.

Logikos 10-03-2005 11:52 PM

Whats the big deal anyways. Give them a few weeks or so. I personaly think its stupid to upgrade a large board ASAP. Unless there are sercuity loops.

MJM 10-04-2005 12:02 AM

Yeah, let xenon port his hacks to 3.5 first so I can upgrade my smaller board first.
Seriously, ;) I'm scheduled out now till the end of Oct before I can upgrade.

Chris M 10-04-2005 12:25 PM

As the Guiness advert says, Good things come to those who wait ;)

I would say that it is in everyone's best interest if the functionality of this site was upgraded in one swoop. That means style updates, code updates and new functionality installed. Then tested vigorously and finally you upgrade. vBulletin.com was easy to upgrade. It runs off of CVS and doesn't have any code modifications. On a larger site with code modifications, you don't rush into upgrades just because they are the latest and greatest.

Bubble #5 10-04-2005 05:37 PM

No one tells anyone else when to upgrade their site, so why should vborg be any different? Please let them use their own good judgment to do what they feel is best for their own site. Does anyone remember the story about the rabbit and the hare? I'm sure we can all be a little more patient while they pull their act together and get all of their ducks in a row. Mmmm... duck. Sounds like dinner :)

thenetbox 10-04-2005 05:40 PM

I had my board tested on a test forum before goign to live and I still ran into issues o_O

Xenon 10-05-2005 04:57 PM

We have a testboard which is upgraded already.

Most vb.org hacks are working already, just 2 very important ones are not 100% finished yet.
After these two hacks are done, we will upgrade vbulletin.org

apart from some very small unimportant hacks you won't miss any features, but see some new ones ;)

Very cool!

Any chance these will be made public? Or, like a Ferrari in a showroom, will we only be allowed to visit here and drool over them; never possessing them?

Edit: PS I like the style being listed in postbit on here. Is there any chance this hack will be released? I have found one but it seems to add a query everytime showthread.php is called, and hoped that your one might function differently.

adill420 10-06-2005 12:05 AM

hmm..interesting..i may sound dumb but can you add hacks etc to a forum and then transfer the current db..wouldn't those hacks have to be redone?

kindly let me know..i have been on the hold for this reason..
