Has vb ever had.....

A TV Commercial?

If not, do you guys plan on ever having one?

bigcurt 09-20-2005 07:23 PM

I seriously doubt it, and if they do the only place I suggest putting it is techtv or something.

I've never really understood how something like vB could ever be advertised other than word of mouth or simple interest. The problem is that vB is just (essentially) a collection of PHP files, and it's not something concrete that you can touch, like a computer. It also isn't something hugely known, like Photoshop.

although a collection of PHP files that is making them all very comfortable financially ;)

I know that. I'm just saying that software is generally hard to make television advertisements for, especially Web-based products.

smacklan 09-21-2005 12:12 AM

This is true.

The average TV watching crowd has no interest in this and it would be a waste of Jelsofts money. Now if Google or someone comes out with user targetted TV ads then it would be a different story :D.

All the forums themselves are advertisements. Any potential forum administrator could see a VBulletin forum and want it for him/her self. :D

Exactly. By me seeing vB being used on other websites, I became interested in the BBS and ultimately became a customer of Jelsoft! :squareeyed:

*Camera pans over beach somewhere on the North Carolina coastline, as the camera approaches a house just off a beach loud music can be heard playing*

*Camera cuts to inside of the house, Asian women fill the room all wearing sailor fukus and dancing to generic dance music (so we didn't have to pay the RIAA any money).*

*Camera pans to Brad sitting in his lazy-boy chair enjoying the view or perhaps a lap dance if the censors will let it pass. Brad gives the thumbs up and says 'vBulletin, it's that good'*

Maybe millions? It's safe to say well over a million, though. I'd think it's pretty accurate to assume that just about all vB license holders own an owned license. So simply multiply the projected exisiting vB out there by $160, and that should give you your answer. And this doesn't take into account the $120 branding free, the $175 professional installation or the $300 phone support.

bigcurt 09-21-2005 03:41 AM

I bet you ( not sure ) but there are more people with a leased license than an owned one.

I don't agree with you, though you may be correct. Not counting pirated boards, it's probably pretty accurate to assume that most vB boards have been around for a year or more. Therefore, I think the webmasters would have realized that an owned license is much cheaper in the long run, and would have opted for that as soon as possible.

Needless to say, though, it's made Jelsoft plenty of money either way.

Haha,

My whole thing is that right now vbulletin is onyl attracting customers who already are somehow familiar with forums and the whole website thing. A commercial will broaden the horizons of people who still think that the only thing you can do online is email and IM. It will bring more people together to do the things we all already enjoy doing.

This is a perfect example of what i'm talking about. Chances are that people who watch techtv know a thing or two about websites and vbulletin as well. Might as well advertise vbulletin right here on vb.org.
