How did you first get into vBulletin?

For me, I was using ProBoards since it debuted in 2000. Around 2003, I was reading complaints about a guy who wanted to buy his ProBoard. Anyway, someone said he should go "waste his money on vBulletin if he wanted to buy a board." So, I checked it out, loved the system, and decided that was the only BBS I wanted. And now here I am...

I joined a forum that was already using it. :)

I joined a forum already using it. I wanted my own so I found TORGC boards. (Long story that is stil lbeing fought in courts last time I checked...Gave away "free" vbulletins through a loop hole in the previous license agreement. Loophole fixed now and he isn't allwoed ot use this method anymore.) I was lead admin there where I appointed "MGM/MetalGearMaster" was co admin. Well we out grew TORGC and MGM bought a vBulletin license. I was kept as a co-admin of his board.

Then we hit some turbulance, my ignorance/stupidity and some misunderstnading got me fired. I started my own out of spite. Sucked, shut-it down and started over. Have a decent board now. About to shut-it down and open up a new one though.

Eh. To be honest..
I was givin a pirated version from someone online. I didn't know it was pirated, I thought it was free software. However long ago 2.0.X was out. I think I had 2.0.4?

I'll assure everyone. Once I found out more about vB.. I reported the guys site, and took mine down. Later.. once I was old enough to have a job, I purchased my license and now I have two. Will be purchasing my third in the next couple of months. :)

I'm sure lots of people have unintentionally pirated the software.

I made the jump from ubb.classic sometime around 2000 - 2001, mainly due to the fact that vBulletin offered the things I was having to hack into ubb and did so without killing our server. :)

I first used ubb.classic because like many others one of the first forums I was a member of used it (ubb 5.x to be exact). I used ubb from the late 5.x days til around the time 6.1.x came out. By the time I came over to vbulletin they were at 2.0.3 I think and working on the 2.2.x line :).

Honestly I don't know... I just remember it was the first forum software I came to... probably via a search... but I did not use it because I did not have the money at the time. I used phpBB for about 7 months and then made the switch.

Never looked back :)

I came to vBulletin when the people at UBBDev.com decided to abuse me away from there. Because they lacked the people skills and general kindness to run a proper modification forum - instead abused, degenerated members, and so forth.

Shows how much the support forums can persuade a person to stay with something or not. Maybe they've learnt their lesson these days and dropped their egotistical approach to running a forum. It wasn't so much the admins, they were great people, but the moderators they chose. *makes choking noises*

At that point I stopped using BBS, then I became an admin on a vBulletin forum and it went on from there. :)

That sounds really mean, but, that's how I came to vBulletin. (Plus it's better ;))

the first forum I used is phpBB, later then my friend tells me that goes making one and it's IBP, used it for a year and another friend of mine switch to vbulletin 2.2.x with the RPG hack (it can be found here), and because the RPG hack of IBP was lack of actions I decided to move to vB. I knew nothing of vbulletin 2.x, with me vb3 is a whole different thing.

love it.

I was forced away from using UBB.classic due to the heavy load on servers, it got to the point where I couldn't find anyone to host my 150 member message board which was quite sad really..

I pirated vB around the 2.2.4 days and didn't like it - I never actually opened the board to anyone.. Though when I was told that vB3 was in development by a friend and it would be the best thing since sliced bread, well - I gave it another chance at about 2.2.7 (I think) and asked a client for a leased vB license as payment for some perl based work I did for them instead of paying me direct. I didn't have a PayPal account back in those days..

I haven't looked back since, and I now own an owned license of my very own.. :D

The first forum I used was a vBulletin (http://www.cdv-board.de/archiv-englisch/) - I teamed with a few members of it and we started our own UBB 5.x - Eventually as it grew differences forged between the members, and half of us left to form a vBulletin board...

I became an Admin, then began to come to vBulletin.org in November 2001 on my friend's account - I registered on the last day of December 2001 and began to work on modifying our board - I eventually purchased my own in the July of 2002 and went from there :)

I was managing SitePoint's forums on UBB 5.4.7... We had to delete posts and messages every month just to keep the forums operating and even then they were slow and not very feature rich. Since the company was settling on PHP for all work in 1999, we decided to upgrade to vBulletin as soon as it was commercially available.

Have since left SitePoint (in 2003) and work full-time for Jelsoft.

Was using IPB till just over 2 years ago, then my host turned around and told me that IPB was causing the server to crash, so i was forced to ditch IPB, i already knew of vB but never made the switch since i was happy with IPB and at the time it being free, but i took on vB with no other choice if i wanted to keep my forum going.

After that i just attuned to vBulletin really, i may of only joined the scene as v3 was nerely going gold, but it's changed over the time and i really am glad that i moved to it.

Funny thing is, host told me vbulletin was doing them same, ended up moving host, could of stayed with IPB forever.... must be fate =P

Had joined a board that was going under, it was running 2.2.6 at the time (back in mid 2002 i think). Me and a couple friends decided it would be cool to setup our own forums, I happened across a nulled copy of vBulletin and we used it for a whole 2 days on my localhost. After that we where like we have to get a real copy. Well we did and now here I am.

Toneboy 09-13-2005 02:55 PM

Like many others I was a member of a board that switched to vBulletin (from Infopop). Liked it and the features it allows you to use elsewhere on the site and decided to go with it when I started my own board.
