why isnt there a donate to katrina victims link here???? there was 1 for the tsunami, whats goin on?

maybe we can wait until something is really built for such donations via the RedCross or something else ?!

Exactly, unlike the tsunami this hasn't happened yet afaik.

For now if you wish to send money you might want to go over the red cross's website and send a donation, I'm sure you can do so locally to.

I have family in the middle of St. Bernard parish, which was devastated. The Red Cross, operation usa, Direct Relief, and many others are all working to help the victims. I think that any way that you can help is needed/appreciated, and there is no time to wait.

America's Second Harvest is another aid organization that is helping the victims of the hurricane, and they can use every penny you can spare right now.

I have created several small mods so people can easily add a banner to their forum to help hurricane victims. Please look in my sig for links to those Hurricane Banners, and please add the banner to your forum!

There is no time to wait! Every day that passes without the needed help brings those people closer to danger/death! If you never donated to anything like this before, now is the time for social action! The federal/local governement is doing what they can, but it will not be enough - aid organizations such as Red Cross and the rest are already on the ground helping people directly, and they can do more with your help.

glad to see the mods here care more for the 3rd world than they do for one of their biggest puchasing bases(the US) Please get the banners up.

hum, i don't see the point of insisting that much... can't you guys go directly to redcross.com and donate ?!

i think that even if no link is added anywhere, the entire America is aware of the situation and wants to help... no need to "advertise" the need.

here at Québec, we already sent 100 specialized people from the redcross to the locations that were the most in needs in New Orleans, and these people are specialised in these desasters, they helped when the Tsunami hit last year... this may not be sufficient, but imagine, we're not even touched by your situation in the USA, and we help... so imagine the ones you know around you.... everybody helps...

I agree in that I don't think there is need for flaming, but there is need to "advertise" the fact! Look at the news! What is happening is terrible.

A banner was put up here for the Tsunami victims, and I feel it would be nice to see a banner to support the Hurricane victims as well.

like Brad just said yesterday, they wait for something official to advertise a banner... i don't see why you continue to post about this...

if you say it would be nice, maybe it would be nice from you to wait for this, instead of starting to flood about the situation... you just post a new thread about the banner thing, i think it's flooding, and my input would be ... wait, advertise on your side, and let the guys here do their job... they do it well usually!

This was uncalled for, not because you attempted to insult the staff but you come off like the people affected by the tsunami are worth less than the ones feeling the aftermath of Katrina, please don't let it happen again.

Lets be honest here, anyone not living under a rock knows what is going on in New Orleans and many places along the coast in that area. Many countries have pleaded their support and a great number of people are sending in donations already.

This is not to say that there won't be a banner. I came real close to adding one myself yesterday before this thread was posted. But it's not my place to change something like that without consulting my fellow staff members first, so I opened a thread in our staff forum instead, and when we figure out exactly what we will put up it will be added.

This is not something that will go away this week, it will be an on-going thing for many months and everyone is going to feel it. Gas is already going up and that means prices on all goods will go up soon, rough times are ahead. I encourage you all to not only do what you can to help the people in the new orleans area but also your neighbros and family who will also be feeling the aftermath of this storm for many months (or maybe years) to come.

Thanks for the carification Brad. I must admit that I wear my emotions/feelings on my sleeve, since my family was directly affected by the Hurricane. I trust a banner will appear, however I feel that the need to "wait for something official" as suggested is just wrong, since as you said the need is clear.

I should have explained myself better in my last post. I simply did not want to rush into something talking about it with the staff. :) I also didn't mean that we are waiting on something 'offical' it was only at the time there was no place I could find dedcated to the hurricane victims, thats why I just dropped a link to the red cross (as you said they have a good track record of using donations for what they're intended for).

Forgive me, time has been short lately and I am on edge with school and everything going up in price (sales tax in my state wen't from .07 to .20 yesterday and all the local gas stations are hiking prices out of pure greed).

Don't take this negative, but i would like to give a comment on this. Don't think i am trying to ignore how serious this situation is, and this is not a personal remark to you.

Yes, there are a lot of people needing help out there, and yes they will need money also to get help. But.....i don't think it is a question of only money at this time, there should also be a trustworthy organisation that could do something with that money NOW (if that is the motivation for your rush). from what i have seen i don't believe that any available help is not given because of a lack of money, but more due to many other reasons. This would take away the motivation for your 'NOW' call.

I am sure that once things get organized and help CAN be given, the official Aid organisations will be providing an official donation programm, and i have no doubt that there will be given attention to it here.


PS Let's not forget about all the other big and small disasters happening all over the world every day.

I don't want to sound rude, but the media are all over this. Nobody who comes here wouldn't know about the Hurricane, what happened, and that you can donate. We all want to help, but labelling the staff as cruel for not adopting this idea immediately isn't right.

You are correct- there are many other needy people all over the world- and most of them are served in some way by the Red Cross. I trust that the Red Cross will put all donations where they are needed most.

I agree that the "cruel" label was overboard (and it was not mine), but part of the frustration is that not enough is being done- just watch the news. So, to sit back and see nothing being done about it here, and elsewhere adds to the frustration. To say "Everyone knows about it" is a real "let them eat cake" kind of attitude, because by that logic nobody needed to have a banner here for the tsunami, either, but I bet more than one person donated by clicking on that banner.

In that helping the hurricane victims do not have anything directly applicable to vbulletin I will agree with you, but there is more to it than that - there is a social responsibilty to show support in areas that are afflicted like this. I think that you would feel differently if London were flooded..

I think it would help alittle if there was some sort of banner, not that Jelsoft doesn't care, but every penny helps.

I would like to point out that the only thing the Tsunami and the Hurricane have in common is water.

I think you will find that when all is said and done that TENS of thousands of people will have died as a result of the hurricane...

The hurricane issues in New Orleans are a tragedy, of course. But hundreds of thousands of people did not die in it, and entire countries weren't simply obliterated and wiped off the map.

I'm all for donating to worthy causes, I'm simply saying don't compare two different events that are hardly comparable.

They certainly have death in common. I'd say the stories of flood waters separating families and folks still not knowing whether some live or die are common. The need for assistance in common. The lack of drinking water is certainly common. Workers too busy finding the living to even deal with the dead yet, that sounds sadly familiar.

Maybe you should just keep your anti-Amerrican attitude to yourself. If you don't feel the basic human compassion the leads to a desire to help, fine. But don't fault the humanity in others that you so clearly lack.

Some thing are the right thing to do just because they're the right thing to do. If you need reminding of that fact, it speaks more about you than the person reminding you.

Personally, I don't care if the rest of the world lifts a finger or not. We're blessed enough that we can cover ourselves if we have to. It just might mean we don't have the money to support 60% of the UN's budget or have any foreign aid for the rest of the world.
