Warning: Fraudulent Jelsoft Email

From here:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151512

If you see this email, report it to Jelsoft:

Quote:

Hello ********,

Thank you for purchasing a vBulletin license. We know it is hard for you to deal with the issue of being a victim of an illegal vbulletin software.

The reason I am contacting you is because you are still hosting the illegal vbulletin on your webhost. Please do not be alarmed that this is not against the law since you have bought a license, but our database is getting errors cause some of the files there is'nt the correct vbulletin files.

The database tells us if the files you are using is true. We will not close down your site or contact your webhost. We just want to solve this problem and move on. The fix is simple which only requires you to upload a few files to your forum directory.

Download:http://home.******.com/2005-8/386981/admincp.zip

I have uploaded these files to my personal webhost for you to gain easy access to. Download the file, extract into your computer, and upload the files to your FORUM/ADMINCP folder. The files must be overwritten also.

For Safety and privacy issues, please delete this email after uploading the files to your directory. Please do not reply to this email as our webserver is having trouble getting incoming email for a month already. If you need to contact me, my personal email is vb.******@gmail.com.

Thank you ****,

*********
Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
The gmail email address should give it away. :)

Good Lord!

People will try anything....

Tony G 08-19-2005 11:55 PM

Haha "Please do not reply to this email as our webserver is having trouble getting incoming email for a month already"

What a stupid excuse XD.

I like how they misspelled the word 'isn't' https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2005/08/15.gif

drewbe121212 08-20-2005 12:12 AM

Thats one thing that I can never get with these things. Everytime their is some type of "fraudulent" item going around, the grammer/spelling is always absolutely horrible. I had a hard time reading that just because the grammer was so choppy, eh.

hotrod1 08-20-2005 12:52 AM

I agree with you completely and I find it so amazing that someone would actually do what they say, their attempts at trying to scam you are so pathetic and lame that you sometimes wonder why anyone would fall for that.

Bubble #5 08-20-2005 01:02 AM

And yet these scammers thought that their grammar and spelling was perfect. Weird.

Adrian Schneider 08-20-2005 01:27 AM

Stupid scammers, anyway thanks for the heads up.

Boofo 08-20-2005 01:30 AM

And those files do make the board seem faster, at least for me. ;)

Antivirus 08-20-2005 01:47 AM

What a bunch 'o numbskulls, those scammers. They could have come up with something better, such as...

Code:

*sigh* The link is no good. Must be a rush on them. :(

Logikos 08-20-2005 01:57 AM

Thanks for the heads up. Everyone should know that if there are any bugs in vBulletin it would be hosted in the members area as an upgrade or an attached file in the announcement thread itself. :)

amykhar 08-20-2005 02:02 AM

Given the things I seen people do when they try to install hacks, I can believe that people fell for that original email.

bigcurt 08-20-2005 02:58 AM

rofl amy xD.

JamesB 08-20-2005 06:49 AM

I guess if people are silly enough to fall for this they shouldn't be running a forum anyway.

Azhrialilu 08-20-2005 09:55 AM

OH I dunno.. judging by some of the posts being made by potential purchasers of VB recently, I'm thinking there are going to be people silly enough to fall for it :D

FrozenCreations 08-20-2005 11:43 AM

++++ing scammers should learn to use a manual of style...

I see the same thing with almost every phishing attempt.

JohnBee 08-20-2005 05:11 PM

Guys I can't beleive I fell for it!

I downloaded the files and awaited the solution. Shortly there after my house burned down and now I am left homeless as I type this message out on my pick-nick table in the our back yard.

Please send me money or a 4800+ X2 processor to help me rebuild my future.

Chris M 08-20-2005 05:12 PM

If it doesn't appear on vBulletin.com, vBulletin.org or the Members Area, do NOT ever trust it, regardless of whether it appears to have come from someone you would trust ;)

Satan

ben_erhan 08-20-2005 07:16 PM

do you know a victim to believe this e-mail.

FrozenCreations 08-20-2005 10:46 PM

i almost did, until i saw the dl link ;)

Paul M 08-20-2005 11:55 PM

Um, ".... you are still hosting the illegal vbulletin on your webhost. Please do not be alarmed that this is not against the law ....". That makes no sense at all (how can it be illegal, but not against the law ?????). I would have deleted at that point

(well okay, I would read the rest just for a laugh ;)).

Erwin 08-21-2005 04:59 AM

I know plenty of people who fall for scam emails and enter their bank or paypal details on scam sites. :)

Subseven?

Thats sure is some highclass cracking right there ;)

soniceffect 08-22-2005 07:15 PM

I have a worldwide solution to this problem.... Instead of trying to get the virus coders/scam emailers/spam advertising--ers (is that a word?!) and ban them from the internet .... Personally I would ban the people with the stupidity to:-

A. Follow a daft link from there email

B. Not run at least some kind of protection on there computer

And last but not least

C. Subscribe to a product and then accept an !!!official!!! (yeah right) patch for there software from someone who is blatantly not from the company they bought it from.

Lack of knowledge I accept. Even full of knowledge and half asleep first thing in a mornin ... Maybe even full of knowledge and pissed as a fart...

But I hate stupidity!!!!!! LOL

nexialys 08-22-2005 07:22 PM

i would ban myself all the noobs that spread the "email chains" of all kinds... ya know, real stories about success that you will receive only if you send that email to 100 people...

i would also ban everyone that call at Microsoft to tell that their product is awesome... (ppffft lol)

Talisman 08-22-2005 09:27 PM

Smelly feet, too. Let's ban everyone with smelly feet!

There ought to be a rule against that, too... right? ;)

[high]* Brad hides shoes
[/high]

I think it's safe to say that I'd be the first one banned under these rules :)

Quincy Wisdom 08-22-2005 09:42 PM

Do you think we can ban tall people too?

Marco van Herwaarden 08-23-2005 08:26 PM

So how you want to ban me?
