[v1.6] Inferno RSS Forum Feeds Technology

This hack was made purely by request, and the fact IPB will have a similar system as default functionality, i wouldn't like them to have a upper hand to vbulletin ;)

v1.5 Updates:
- Auto detect RSS settings system
- Forum stats rebuilt correctly (last post info)

v1.6 Updates:
- Various bug fixes

Description:
This once added to your forum allows you to connect to any RSS feed you desire, once set up the system will automatically post data from the RSS feed into threads within a specified forum.

Previews are available at the bottom, and an FAQ is built into the admin controls since I know not everyone will understand how to set up the options. Also an example to use a BBC UK News rss feed is below :)

Example BBC UK News Feed:
Feed Name: BBC UK News
Feed Location: http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonl...t_page/rss.xml
Feed Prefix: [BBC UK News]
Feed From User: Assign users username of your own choice
Feed Forum: Choose a forum you want threads to be posted into
Feed Read Direction: Newest First
Parent RSS Tag Name: channel
Items RSS Tag Name: item
Thread Title RSS Tag Name: title
Thread Post RSS Construct:
HTML Code:

[b]Published:[/b] {XML[pubDate]}

{XML[description]}
[url={XML[link]}]Read More...[/url]

Note: After adding a new feed i suggest clicking update for that feed, this will manually update that singular feed specified, the cron job included will automatically update all feeds, best not to have it update them all from the start otherwise it could execute a lot of queries. Further more I highly recommend you do not have lots of feeds unless your server can with-stand it.

Enjoy :)

v2 Expected Features:
- Import/Export Forum Feeds
- Auto Detect RSS Settings (won't be 100% garentee'd to work, but should do 80% of the time)

RSS is becomming bigger every day, so i should hardly think you'd have a problem finding an rss feed you'd want :)

Any website that has RSS Feeds. 90% of News sites have them.

MSNBC
GAMESPOT

Just Google "RSS Feeds"

Also just about every single blogging site has RSS feeds

I know that, sir, I wasn't exopectuing you to provide more than you already have. I was just hoping someone might be able to help me find something for this is all. No expectations, just a request. ;)

I'm open for suggestions, i did look at the article bot, the only major difference i see here is the manual ability to construct the feed how you want, like which data will be used for threads, titles, and the post construct.

Well, I haven't installed it quite yet as I haven't found a feed for it. But knowing your coding abilities, I will definately be installing it as soon as I find a proper feed. You are an amazing coder, young man. Something to be very proud of. ;)

Vizionz 08-17-2005 08:34 PM

this is confusing to me but i added the info then update and got

Fatal error: Unable to proceed with save while $errors array is not empty in class vb_datamanager_thread_firstpost in /includes/class_dm.php on line 758

yeah nevermind that it was an error with my ffeed info :P works perfect as usual Clicks install

Lazarous 08-17-2005 08:45 PM

Great! Thank you, sir. ;)

Ok, I'vce never done this before. How do I go about getting the feed going for the link I found?

Zero Tolerance 08-17-2005 10:50 PM

Good resource, it finds sites and each result will have a button, which says "RSS", click that for the feed, if it's formatted like a normal website instead of code you'll have to view the source code to see how it's structured, from there on the help in the forum feeds control will help you set it up :)

Guest190829 08-17-2005 10:50 PM

Theres a bug with the latest post on forumhome. Instead of showing the newest RSS feed on the latest post, it's showing the oldest RSS Feed.

Anyone else having this problem?

Vizionz 08-17-2005 10:55 PM

That's because vBulletin uses a global variable for the time function (TIMENOW), the system adds all -new- feeds one by one, but keeps to the same time because of this.

If you want in the next version i can make it increase the last added time by 1 second, so the sort order should be correct :)

Ok, here's a link I came up with. Is this an RSS link then?

And is it a one time shot or regular? Sorry to sound so ignornat on this, but this is my first time at this. So, please be gentle. ;)

You'll want to look for the link ending with rss.xml and add that link along with the feed info into the rss feeds.

Look at the description at zero tolerance's Example BBC UK News Feed:

Cyburbia 08-18-2005 02:00 AM

I'll let you now how it works. I've been waiting forward to such an extension, checking every day to see is an RSS feed aggregator has arrived yet.

I''ve got a request that one thing be changed - "RSS Forum Feeds" control panel lins should be BELOW "vBulletin Options", not at the very top.

bigcurt 08-18-2005 02:30 AM

Sup ZT, I know you have to be busy man and I was looking for an alternative to Article bot and I believe I found it, but because of my board I do not have 3.X installed yet..so is there anyway you can do me ( and others ) a favor and port this over to 3.0.X??

Suggest that to vB, thats how they built the cp nav system to work, nothing i can do about it i'm afraid.

Unfortunatly i cannot do this bigcurt, i will be updating this when i get time, and it would just be a pain to update it for both versions really, and cause double the support/double the time.

I'll be including a str_replace/preg_replace replacement options per feed in v2, and also global replacements (some feeds use invalid chars/html) :)

Dream 08-18-2005 03:57 AM

isnt that just a parsing option when posting a new message with the object? its nothing fancy just the standard behavior when posting a message

john1744 08-18-2005 04:12 AM

How do I set up the cron job? This is badass btw Zero. Mucho gracias. ^__^

here you go....
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr...F-8&output=rss

for reference......
just go to google news....search for what you want... the results themselves are an RSS feed (auto RSS detectors---like mathox has one built into the browswer itself) will generate the link you need (and/or there is a RSS link for the results page on the lower left. click that and copy the url). ;)

john1744 08-18-2005 04:47 AM

Ah, I think a cron job is just a scheduled task. At least it looks the exact same as his description.
