Reviving a dying forum.

Currently my forum, Forum Central, is suffering from lack of being used. At one point it was getting 50 to 100 posts a day, but over time, people lose interest. Forum Central is a "forum based community," there is no website filled with content to be its backbone (which I currently plan on correcting, soon).

Still, the lack of activity is rather despairing. I used to have the RPG Battle System installed, but in trying to upgrade the code, it broke the whole system.. still, not many of the users used the Battle System (sadly).

I've been looking for a few mods that might promote activity (even spamming, anything, really)! Does anyone have any ideas on how to promote the welfare of a forum, to keep it active, to keep it alive?

I'd appreciate any ideas! Thanks!

One thing you may want to look at is your browser logs to see if any (how many) of your users are using alternate browsers.

I am on 1280x800 (wide screen laptop) and on FireFox, I am getting a terrible screen scroll.

Screen grabs for IE and FF are attached. :)

Ah, thanks for showing me that! That would be vBindex 3.0. Know of a code-friendly portal system? Firefox doesn't like incorrect HTML because it runs on Mozilla, when IE sees it perfect.

As for the other community, though they give great tips (and it looks like a great community), most of that is stuff I've been doing for.. ages. o_O

See your forum has a GREAT domain..you could pull people interested to talk about anything..if you work hard you can get your site VERY big, VERY quick.

Forum-central.com has existed for 3 years, and has only managed to get as big as it is. I really don't know what else to try, other than creating a website with content that attracts people (stand-alone forums don't seem to attract people).

Thanks, Allan. :)

I just got Firefox, and the forum shows up fine for me.. are you sure your Firefox isn't broken?

I'm also very interested in any new mods (designed/compatible with 3.0.8) that would promote posting. Any thoughts on that?

You have a very nice forum layout and style. It's basically because there are sooo many general-type forums that many will end up losing out, and yours is one of them. You need to provide something that all those other non-concepted forums do not offer.

Dorign 08-05-2005 04:30 AM

Like what? o_O That's what I'm askin'.. :P

Tony G 08-05-2005 01:53 PM

I don't know the answer to that, sorry. :p Look around at the other general-type forums, you'll see for yourself.

Well my suggestion is this:

Since the name is so generic (and may I add... very SEO friendly). Pick maybe 3 or 4 good topics which could generate ALOT of interest and feedback.

BUT, be wary of politics and the sort because that can catapult your site into a side of the fence that no one wants to be on.

BTW: Scrap vBIndex ( no offense to its creator) BUT I suggest you go with vBAdvanced or better yet create your own Portal Page (It's really not that difficult).

I have a forum that plays on that side of the fence. Does very well and has some of the most intelligent people I have ever met participating in the threads. Of course we get our share of trolls and idiots, but, the regulars know how to deal with them.

I scrapped vBindex, and as soon as I figure out article bots, vBadvanced will be in place. ^_^

Alrighty, running on vBadanced now. http://www.forum-central.com/
