Miserable Users

This modification is no longer available or supported.

Here is a 3.5 version of the ever popular "miserable users" hack. Basically a way to really annoy anyone you don't want visiting your forum. Based on the original idea & hack for vb2 by Zzed, and the vb3 port by KuraFire.

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the "server busy" message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

Note: All the above options are set in the vBulletin Options.

To install this hack simply download the xml file to your pc and then import it into vbulletin as a product - then create your 'miserable users' usergroup and set the value of this group, and your preferred other settings, in the hacks settings area (vBulletin Oprions > Miserable Users). To make a member suffer just edit their profile to add them to the miserable users group (it will work as either the primary group or as a secondary group).

History:

v2.01 - Released as a product - all settings are in the vB options.
v2.02 - Added option for multiple usergroups to be defined as miserable.
v2.03 - Added option for IP addresses to be defined as miserable.
v2.04 - Updated multiple usergroups code.
v2.05 : Minor changes, no update necessary.

first post w00t, works great...thanx

*clicks install*

theArchitect 07-31-2005 04:17 AM

The only thing this lacks is the ability to install a webcam in the chosen users room to watch their reactions.

.Tim 07-31-2005 07:35 AM

I have a few banned users I'd almost consider letting back in just to use this on them. haha :D

Vizionz 07-31-2005 09:40 AM

Shy 07-31-2005 09:44 AM

another excellent hack and just what i need for one annoying member

Paul M 07-31-2005 12:15 PM

I forgot to mention that this also increases the post flood limit by five times, so if you normally limit members to one post per 30 seconds then it will be once every 2.5 minutes (assuming they have the patience to get past everything else).

Martin 07-31-2005 06:38 PM

This has got to be the single best concept EVER. I have a user who has been banned at least 50 times, but keeps returning. We let him stay til other members get tired of abusing him, then ban him again. This will be SO MUCH FUN.

It would be nice if there was an Admin button on posts to automatically throw them in that group :)

ToastBusters 07-31-2005 06:59 PM

I'm waiting on the full release of vb3.5 before I get it, but I'm sure this will be one of the first things I add in the new plugin section when I do. Fortunately for me, the members that I've had problems with don't know what that "Tachy" feature is or does, so they generally have no idea why no one cares what they have to say. This would be a great addition to that, as it would discourage them from coming back.

I wonder how hard it would be to identify repeat members quickly that just fire up a new proxy and register a new account... that's the problem I'm having right now.

akanevsky 07-31-2005 08:06 PM

Nice hack :) I will install it as soon as I get some idiots on my board..

Sovereign 07-31-2005 08:29 PM

Trolls will be owned!

mvigod 08-01-2005 02:37 AM

Fantastic hack...hilarious.

Bad Bunny 08-01-2005 03:29 PM

This is so much better than the odd Coventry feature or whatever it is called. I haven't had problems with users in a looong time though. Maybe that will change, and if it does, I'll grab this in a hurry.

This is SO needed!

ricker 08-08-2005 01:14 AM

When I import the file provided, I get "Invalid File Specified."
I tried it twice even, anyone have any ideas for me?
Thanks, Sarah

Thanks, Sarah

You have to upload it via "Download / Upload Plugins"

Milesian 08-12-2005 08:40 AM

Is there any chance it will work on Beta 4?

Milesian 08-12-2005 01:43 PM

It's ok, it does :)

Itachi0009 08-12-2005 03:54 PM

This is perfect for the up and coming dictator webmasters of the world.

A must for all evil super powers.

Oblivion Knight 08-13-2005 08:57 PM

I was never a fan of this modification.. Until now.

Somehow, a ban didn't quite seem fitting. A bit of torture is just what is required.! ;)

wolfyman 08-17-2005 03:01 AM

awesome. love it :D

Flexo 08-19-2005 06:44 PM

Oh man, this owns so much, I canĀ“t even put it into words.

RMS-Chef 08-21-2005 03:09 PM

Great addition, thank you.

I tweaked the load time settings down a little and instead of redirecting to the home page 25% of the time, I redirect them to gay porn. ;)

Tulsa 08-21-2005 08:52 PM

I find it's best to toy with them a bit. Hit them with the hack, let'em stew for a bit. Take them back to registered users, let them get comfortable again a day or so is fine, then smack'em once again.

Lather, rinse and repeat...

darksoulz 08-26-2005 07:09 PM

This is so evil. I love it. Yet another reason to bug the other admin that actuall has shell access to upgrade to the 3.5 series.

Paul M 08-26-2005 08:41 PM

Just a quick reminder, please do click on Install if you have actually installed this mod - thanks. :)

ajpritch 08-31-2005 07:56 AM

Yes.

Plugin works wonderfully. Currently using it on our devel forum, can't wait to let it out into production. There's a few apples i've been wanting to rot for a while and banning sometimes is just way too easy.

cnutter 09-13-2005 11:58 PM

Great plugin... I must say... hours and hours of fun.

The only option that would be nice is if it had a interface like the banning system has. So it would be accessable via the Moderator Control Panel along with the Admin control panel.

Basicly, it would be nice to allow them to be able to added and remove Miserable Users just like banned users. Also allowing time limits just like the banning system would be a nice option.

Anyway, LOVE THE PLUGIN. Thanx Nutter

Paul M 09-14-2005 12:12 AM

Make the usergroup you created a "bannable" group - then moderators (and admins) can move users to it via the 'ban user' option.

cnutter 09-14-2005 12:24 AM

nice..... thanx that will be very useful.......
